Tourism in St. Anton am Arlberg - Travel & Leisure

Welcome to St. Anton am Arlberg Travel & Leisure! St-Anton The tourist attractions of St-Anton concentrate several areas. St. Anton is part of the Arlberg area of ski resorts – a region that includes 94 cable cars and ski lifts, 340 km (210 mi) of groomed pistes and 200 km (120 mi) of deep-snow runs, all of which are covered under one liftpass. On the western edge of village is the "Galzigbahn" which has been replaced by a Funitel gondola. The new gondola includes a first-ever "Ferris wheel": enabling passengers to board the gondolas on ground level, then rotating the gondolas up to the main high-speed cables. The Funitel accesses the Galzig slopes and connects to Schindler and Valluga peaks. On the eastern edge of town, the Nassereinbahn rises to the Nasserein area with connections to the Kapall peak. The Kapall, Valluga, and Schindler peaks provide skiers with close to 1,500 vertical metres skiing (4,920 ft). Slope-side après-ski bars can be found on the Steissbachtal trail just above St. Anton. The groomed runs in the region cater to all levels; 43% are for beginners (blue), 41% for intermediate skiers (red) and 16% are for the more advanced (black). There are also 200 km (120 mi) of deep snow runs in the area. Expert terrain includes less-frequently groomed ski routes such as Schindlerkar and Mattun, and the backside of Valluga (2,811 metres or 9,222 feet) down to Zürs, which is for experts only if accompanied by a guide. There are also a large number of off-piste routes in the area that experts can explore with the help of a guide. Other ski areas are St. Christoph, a hamlet where in the 14th century the shepherd Heinrich Findelkind built a hospice as a shelter for travellers crossing the Arlberg pass to the Vorarlberg province, Stuben, Lech, Zürs, Warth-Schröcken and Klösterle/Sonnenkopf.

Best places to visit in St. Anton am Arlberg

To list all of the places to visit in St. Anton am Arlberg would be impossible. There are many activities one can do in St. Anton. There are many sightseeing spots around the village, cycle tracks and a sports centre with pools, whirlpools and a water slide. During the summer months, many tourists come to hike the mountain. The best known of the ski resorts in Austria's Arlberg, St. Anton is one of Europe's — and the World's — top resorts for serious skiers, with some of the most challenging runs in the Alps. It holds an important place in ski history as the site of the first ski club in the Alps, which began here in 1901. If you're an expert skier, this is the place to be. It's no place for beginners, although strong intermediates will find plenty of skiing in its 280 kilometers of terrain.

Reaching heights of 2,800 meters, St. Anton is known for its off-piste opportunities for advanced skiers and its mega-moguls. The longest downhill piste in the Arlberg is in St. Anton, aptly named "The White Thrill." Lifts leave right from the village, a car-free cluster of shops, cafés, inns, and hotels. The latter include some highly rated luxury properties at mid-range prices, such as the beautiful Himmlhof, within a short walk of ski lifts. In normal years, the village is a lively place, well-known for its boisterous après-ski scene, but this season all après-ski activities have been banned, and restaurants must close earlier. Also, the ski kindergarten won’t operate this season.

A ski bus can take less accomplished (and less daring) skiers to the nearby slopes of Lech and Zürs, both of which are included in the regional Arlberg lift pass, covering a total of 340 kilometers of slopes and pistes. Some of these other areas are also connected to St. Anton by new lifts that link to ski pistes on the other side of the Flexen Pass. St. Anton has one other advantage: you can reach it by train.

Valluga is a 2,809 m high mountain in the Lechtal Alps. The border between the Austrian states Tyrol and Vorarlberg runs over the summit. It is about 3 km north of the village St. Christoph am Arlberg and the Arlberg Pass. Sonnenkopf is a small, affordable, family-friendly ski area near the Klostertal villages of Wald, Danofen, Klösterle and Langen. It's also part of the huge Arlberg ski area. But whereas the other Arlberg ski resorts like St Anton, Lech and Zurs are all lift-linked, Sonnenkopf is a bus or car ride away. Galzig is a mountain in the Lechtal Alps of Tyrol, Austria. The elevation at its peak is 2,184 metres. Located near St. Anton am Arlberg, it is a popular hiking and skiing destination, depending on the season. The Spullersee is an originally natural high mountain lake in Vorarlberg. It was dammed up between 1919 and 1925 by the Austrian Federal Railways on the occasion of the electrification of the Arlberg Railway and has since been used for energy generation. In addition to numerous hikes on and around the Spullersee, this is also a popular fishing spot. Whether rainbow, brook or lake trout, lake or brook trout, beautiful salmonids can be caught at almost any point of the approximately 50-acre reservoir. The Spullersee can be reached in several ways: on foot from Klostertal and from Lech Zürs, by hiking bus from Dalaas or Lech or by bike through the Zugertal to Spullersee. The journey by car to Spullersee is only possible via the toll road (€ 15) from the Zug district.
