Best places to visit in Mayrhofen
To list all of the places to visit in Mayrhofen would be impossible.
Each spring (usually early April), Mayrhofen hosts the Snowbombing music festival. Since the initial event in 2000 (held in Risoul, France), snowbombing has gathered much notoriety and respect in the electronic dance music world as one of the major festivals. The event has been hosted by Mayrhofen since 2005.
Both powder hounds and snowboarders love Mayrhofen for its outstanding terrain parks and its vast open snowfields on the higher slopes. But there is plenty here for all levels of skier and boarder, and value prices. In fact, a German newspaper named Mayrhofen the best value ski area for the money.
As at other resorts, the 24-seat gondola and 10-seat gondolas will operate at reduced capacity this season. The 10-person Möslbahn gondola connects with the Horbergbahn cable car, and its slope is now a Ski Movie Run, equipped with cameras, so you can have a video of your skiing.
The six snowboarding areas of the Vans Penken Park have their own quad chairlift, as does a dedicated kids' park. The area-wide Zillertaler Superskipass covers 489 kilometers of pistes in the whole valley, served by 177 lifts. The intermediate Mayrhofen/Hippach facility has 159 kilometers of runs, almost 100 percent of which are covered by snowmaking. Austria's steepest groomed ski run, Harakiri, has a 78 percent gradient.
Mayrhofen and Hippach are down-to-earth and romantic, but also super sporty, diversified and stylish. In the winter, the “leisure mountain” Ahorn and the “action mountain” Penken leave nothing to be desired. There is something for every “slope freak”, such as the gentle blue downhill run for children, families and beginners as well as the “Harakiri”, Austria’s steepest ski slope! But the holiday region in the Zillertal also offers all kinds of activities away from the slopes. Finkenberg! On the borderline of the wide Zillertal and the narrow Tuxertal lies a small ski resort called Finkenberg. This peaceful spot is the perfect alternative to skiers who could not care less about being seen on the slopes at the dazzling Mayrhofen. The environment is truly magnificent and the ski area is vast.
Take a scenic gondola ride up Penken Action Mountain to explore all the fun at 1,790 meters above sea level. The top of this state-of-the-art gondola gives access to mountain biking and hiking. Capture stunning mountain views and explore the gorgeous Alpine scenery on rides, walks and hikes along the stunning network of signed trails, among them highlights such as the stroller accessible Panorama Trail. Test your rock climbing agility on the climbing terrain with various routes to explore. If flying high on thermals is your kind of game, Penken Action Mountain boasts two take-off points for a paragliding experience you’ll never forget. The Harakiri is a slope in the ski resort of Mayrhofen Ski Zillertal 3000. It is named after the Japanese vulgar term for seppuku, ritual suicide by samurai. With incline of up to 78%, vertical drop of 375 metres and a length of about 1500 metres, it is the steepest groomed slope in Austria. Thus the slope is steeper than the initial trace of a ski jump. Because of this extreme inclination, the slope can only be maintained with a special secured slope unit.
