or Sölden is an Alpine resort in the Ötztal Valley, in the Austrian state of Tyrol. Lifts including the high-tech Giggijoch mountain gondola provide access to ski slopes. The panoramic Ötztal Glacier Road connects with the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers. Lookouts on the Gaislachkogl, Tiefenbachkogl and Schwarze Schneid peaks, all more than 3,000 meters high, offer sweeping views of the Ötztal Alps.

Sölden is a municipality in the Ötztal valley of Tyrol, Austria. At c. 467 km2 (180 sq mi), it is the largest municipality in the country. The population of 3,449 (as of 2003) is outnumbered by tourists, of which 15,000 can be accommodated. With tourist bed nights running at over two million per year, the municipality is third only to Vienna and Salzburg as an Austrian tourist destination. Sölden has lost some of its former small village charm, but other attractions have been enhanced in recent years. The main village of Sölden is at an elevation of 1,368 metres (4,488 ft) above sea level, and the upper village of Hochsölden at 2,090 m (6,857 ft) has 5 four-star hotels. The highest peak is the Wildspitze, at 3,768 m (12,362 ft), the second highest mountain in Austria, after the Großglockner. The Ötztal Glacier Road is the second highest paved road in Europe. It is the access road from Sölden to the Rettenbach glacier and Tiefenbachferner glaciers in the Ötztal Alps. The English spelling of the town is "Soelden". One may come across websites and directions using this spelling of the town.

Tourism in Solden - Travel & Leisure

Welcome to Solden Travel & Leisure! Solden The tourist attractions of Solden concentrate several areas. With a high altitude and linked to two glaciers, Sölden is assured some of Austria's most reliable snow, with the added appeal of almost year-round skiing on the glaciers, which reach to a high point of 3,250 meters. Although warming climates make this less certain, it is not unusual to find skiers here from September through June. It's only an hour's drive from Innsbruck, but was largely overlooked by international skiers until it was used as the setting for the 2015 James Bond film, Spectre. Its mixed 150-kilometer terrain makes it more versatile than many resorts, and although it has a higher percentage of gentle and intermediate runs, the glaciers and off-piste skiing give experts plenty of options, especially on the Gaislachkogl mountain. Rettenbach also has more challenging terrain and has been the venue for the World Cup circuit since the 2000/2001 season. The two glaciers and the three different mountains are connected by actual runs and lifts, so skiing between them is not a series of cross-country catwalks. What the village of Sölden lacks in picturesque charm, it normally makes up for in exuberant après-ski life.

Best places to visit in Solden

To list all of the places to visit in Solden would be impossible. Timmelsjoch, is a high mountain pass that creates a link through the Ötztal Alps along the border between Austria and Italy. The Timmelsjoch connects the Ötztal valley in the Austrian state of Tyrol to the Passeier Valley in the Italian province of South Tyrol, as it bridges the saddle point between the Jochköpfl and Wurmkogl peaks to its northeast and southwest, respectively. The pass is sometimes called the "secret passage" because it is little-used compared to the much easier and lower Brenner Pass some 25 kilometres to its east, and Reschen Pass some 60 kilometres to its west.

Wildspitze is the highest mountain in the Ötztal Alps and in North Tyrol, as well as the second highest mountain in Austria after the Großglockner and in terms of prominence is the fourth summit of the Alps and the fifteenth of Europe. Mountain with gondolas & a restaurants.

The Rettenbach glacier is a glacier in Europe, located near Sölden in the Ötztal Alps of Tyrol, Austria. In late October, the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season opens with a giant slalom for both genders on the glacier. The races in October 2016 started at an elevation of 3,040 m and finished at 2,670 m, for a vertical drop of 370 m. The glacier is also an attractive area for regular skiers and plays an important role in connecting the main ski area of Sölden with the Tiefenbach glacier.

The Ötztal is an alpine valley located in Tyrol, Austria. The Ötztaler Ache river flows through the valley in a northern direction. The Ötztal separates the Stubai Alps in the east from the Ötztal Alps in the west. The valley is 65 km (40 mi) long. The northern end of the valley is at the confluence of the Ötztaler Ache and Inn rivers, 8 km east of Imst and 50 km west of Innsbruck. The southern end of the valley, also called the Gurglertal, terminates at the border with Italy. The valley is formed by the main chain of the Alps, with many glaciers and high peaks, including the Weißkugel and the Similaun. The village of Obergurgl at the southern end of the Ötztal is the highest parish in Austria. The Ötztal consists of five municipalities (from north to south): Sautens, Oetz, Umhausen, Längenfeld, and Sölden. The main industry in the valley is tourism. The mountains around the valley are popular with both mountaineers and skiers. There are ski resorts in the upper part of the valley at Sölden, Hochsölden, and Hochgurgl. The Timmelsjoch mountain pass connects the Ötztal with the Passeier Valley and Merano in the province of South Tyrol, Italy. The Ötztal Glacier Road is the highest paved road in the Alps.
